This hugely popular Chinese rival, the Model 3, is becoming a bigger problem for Tesla

Xiaomi has taken the automotive world by storm over the past couple of years, but it’s not resting on its laurels in China’s highly competitive electric vehicle market. The SU7, the phone maker’s first ever, has been on sale for less than two years, and Xiaomi has just announced a comprehensive mid-cycle refresh for 2026.

While Tesla is launching modified versions of older cars, Xiaomi is working hard to stay ahead of the market.

On the face of it, the updated SU7 looks almost like the old model, except for a new color called Capri Blue, a slightly redesigned lower grille and a new 20-inch wheel design. Inside, Xiaomi says there’s a new interior color and ambient lighting, as well as a revised center console, seats and steering wheel.

Real updates are under the skin. Initially, the old SU7 only used an 800V structure on its top. Now all models get a boost from 400V to 800V class systems. The Standard and Pro models now run at 752 volts, while the top Max version runs at 900 volts.

As a result, charging times have decreased. Xiaomi says the SU7 is capable of adding a whopping 416 miles of range in 15 minutes. Range jumps, too — from 434 miles to 447 miles in the Standard car, from 516 miles to 560 miles in the Pro car, and from 497 miles to 518 miles in the Max car.

Keep in mind that all of these range estimates are based on China’s CLTC rating system, which is more generous and less realistic than the EPA numbers we’re used to in the US.

Lower-spec models now get Xiaomi’s in-house developed V6s and an increase in power and range. Single-engine models now have 320 horsepower (up from 299), while the all-wheel-drive Max has a whopping 690 horsepower. Also, the Pro model now gets dual-chamber air suspension which was previously only available on the top trims.

On the safety front, the car now has an emergency power source for the rear door openers and two additional airbags. Those changes are coming Following some notable eventsincluding one that has drawn scrutiny about how a car’s electronic door handles function in the event of an accident.

But these changes led to higher prices. All around, the facelifted SU7 is about $2,000 more expensive than before. But at $32,700 for the base model SU7 Standard, that’s still a relative bargain in China and undercuts the Tesla Model 3. The updated SU7 is scheduled to go on sale by April.

The SU7 has already proven itself to be a force in the Chinese market, while impressing everyone who gets one here in the West. Xiaomi sold more than 400,000 cars last year, its first full year in the auto business.

It’s interesting to see that while brands like Tesla are content with the older (but popular) model – for example, their first “new” model in years is the extended YL – Xiaomi (and other Chinese brands) are constantly updating and improving.

When Xiaomi finally starts exporting its cars outside of China, it will clearly come with its A-game. I’m not sure if the rest of the world is ready.
