- BMW electric vehicle sales in the US falter in 2025.
- The German company sold 16.7% fewer electric cars last year than in 2024.
- On the other hand, hybrid electric vehicles had a strong year, with US sales up 30.7%.
BMW It set a new all-time sales record in the United States in 2025, the third straight year of record sales here. But the German automaker’s success in America depends more on its gas-electric hybrid models, and less on its electric cars.
Last year, BMW sold 388,897 vehicles in the US, an increase of 4.7% from 2024 and a nice gift to celebrate the brand’s 50th anniversary here. However, on the electric car front, things are not looking great, as sales of all BMW electric cars have declined.

The BMW i7 has been the slowest-selling electric vehicle in the company’s portfolio, with 2,905 units finding new customers in the US in 2025.
In total, BMW sold 42,484 electric vehicles in the United States last year, a decline of 16.7% year over year. Things were especially bad in the fourth quarter. Since the $7,500 federal tax credit is no longer available to renters, BMW sold 7,557 electric vehicles, a decline of 45.5% year over year. The company said, “This result reflects the broader American market, where demand for electric cars declined throughout the year, especially in the fourth quarter.”
However, at the same time, plug-in hybrids finished the year strong and nearly outpaced electric vehicles in the fourth quarter, with 7,141 sales, despite a 25.6% sales decline compared to the same period in 2024. BMW sold a total of 25,351 PHEVs in the US last year, representing a 30.7% increase compared to 2024, when 19,398 units were sold.
