The year 2025 witnessed an earthquake in the sales numbers of Volkswagen (VW) cars and its luxury sister from the same group, Audi, in the American market. Despite the launch of new cars and the mid-life updates it provided to a number of models, the results were disappointing, with strange exceptions that no one expected!
Electricity saved them and then let them down! The story of Volkswagen and Audi 2025 car sales
Volkswagen: A sharp decline, but Mazda excels!
Volkswagen sold only 329,813 new cars in America during the recently ended 2025, a decline of 13%. The biggest shock was that the Japanese company Mazda outperformed it in the American market after it sold 410,346 new cars during the same period of time.

Despite the modernization of models such as; Jetta, Taos, and Tiguan, but all gasoline cars recorded a frightening decline:
- Jetta: decreased by 24.4%.
- Golf GTI and Golf R: a sharp decrease of 34.7%.
- Tiguan And Atlas (called Teramont in our markets): varying declines despite its previous popularity.
Surprise: Electricity saved the situation temporarily!

The only cars that achieved growth among Volkswagen cars were electric! For one reason only: “to race before the tax incentives are removed.”
- VW ID.4: Its sales jumped in the third quarter by 176%, but once government support in the American market ended, sales collapsed at the end of the year to record only 248 new cars!
- ID. Buzz: The electric bus has achieved skyrocketing growth of 428%, but surprisingly, the German company decided to temporarily cancel the 2026 model.
Audi is in a critical situation: losing to traditional competitors
The German company Audi was not in the best condition during the year 2025, as its sales in the American market, the second largest car market in the world after the Chinese market, declined by 16%.

The numbers show a large gap between it and its rivals:
- Audi: sold 164,942 new cars during 2025.
- BMW: It swept the year 2025 with 388,897 new cars it was able to sell.
- Lexus: sold 370,260 new cars.
Strangely, the “old” models in the Audi fleet, such as the A7 and Q8, were the only ones that achieved a slight growth of 5%, while sales of electric Audi cars such as E-tron GT By 59%.

Arab GT Analysis: Why this decline?
The Volkswagen Group is going through a “difficult transition” phase in the United States of America, as the American consumer has become more cautious towards electric cars after canceling incentives, and at the same time, the company’s gasoline cars have begun to lose their luster in front of Japanese and American competitors (such as Lexus and Cadillac). Audi is currently betting on a “comprehensive renewal” of its fleet (A5, A6, Q5) to restore confidence in 2026.
